SOLAS

The Safety Of Lifes At Sea (SOLAS) convention falls under the International Maritime Organization (IMO). SOLAS is regarded as the most important international convention concerning the safety of maritime vessels. The main purpose of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the construction, equipment, and operation of ships in order to guarantee safety on board. Alphatron Marine has extensive knowledge when it comes to international regulations regarding your navigation equipment. Do you have questions? Please feel free to contact the nearest Alphatron Marine office, or use our SOLAS configurator to see which navigation equipment is required on board as a minimum.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is a worldwide emergency and safety system for shipping at sea. According to the GMDSS, a ship that complies with these requirements must be able to contact a shore station, receive weather reports and maintain ship-to-ship communications, at any time and from any location. GMDSS is currently mandatory for commercial shipping, but for safety reasons, it is also strongly recommended for pleasure craft.

GMDSS requirements depend on the sailing area of your ship. If you sail up to 20 to 30 miles from the coast, we call this the A1 area, and a standard VHF is sufficient (JHS-800S). This allows you to reach the Coast Guard, make and maintain contact with other ships and receive the weather forecast. Outside the A1 area, up to +/- 200 to 300 miles from the coast, is the A2 area. The A3 area is the zone outside A1 and A2 but within range of an Inmarsat satellite. This can actually be received anywhere in the world except for the areas near the northern and southern poles. A4 are the remaining areas around the pool area. Now that it is clear what the different sailing areas are, we have made a diagram below with the required equipment per sailing area. Of course, you can always contact us for personalized advice, we are happy to help you.

Special projects

On the one hand, there is an increasing demand for standardization, on the other, there are projects that are anything but standard. Alphatron Marine has a standard portfolio, this portfolio consists of so-called COTS products (Commercial Of The Shelf) and these are the same for every customer. However, sometimes we also get requests for MOTS products, Modified / Military Of The Shelf products. These projects require product customization, such as command and control software or products for a specific type of customer, such as naval or coastguard projects. These kinds of products and projects require a completely different kind of project management.

To ensure we can handle these more complex projects, we leverage stronger partnerships with other suppliers, such as Terma A/S. With partnerships like this, we can provide more effective and affordable solutions that fit your vessel.

These special projects require a different approach. That is why our global engineering and project management team and our people responsible for sales, installation, and preparation are assisted by the head office in Rotterdam. Projects that are classified as 'special projects' require a more detailed and precise approach in the implementation phase. This can be due to: (inter)national laws and regulations and any restrictions imposed, foreign policy, taking into account the commercial interests of suppliers, having contracts with a neighboring country, and timelines of these projects. As a supplier, you have been involved in the project from the tender, because the equipment and software are just as important as the ship itself. It is the system that makes the ship operational. There are often 100 to 200 specific requirements that the equipment must meet, and ultimately you will have to deal with stricter qualifications and inspections. Do you have a special request? Contact us, and we will be happy to assist you.
