Internship is an important part of an education. As an intern you get an impression of how things really work in practice. But also for a work placement company, an internship is often an instructive experience. After all, new generations of students and new study programs bring different ideas. Recently Colin van Es did an internship at JRC | Alphatron Marine. He worked on setting up a new communication tool for the inland shipping sector, which had both a technical and a marketing-related touch.
“I am following the Commercial Technician Engineering course at the Techniek College Rotterdam,” Colin van Es explains. “This study is a mix between a technical and a commercial course, where you learn to switch between customer and company. You not only learn how to 'sell' something, but you also learn about technology so that you understand what you are selling.” Colin's main assignment was to set up a technical newsletter. “Of course the company already had ideas about what should be included, but it still had to be investigated whether the target group also needed it. One of my tasks was therefore to contact customers and dealers for feedback. It became clear that there was indeed a demand for more information about new products, the latest technical innovations and available updates. That will certainly be the focus of the newsletter that will be published every quarter from now on,” explains Colin.
Colin looks back on a fun, but above all instructive period. “When I stepped into the office here, I didn't know what my new colleagues meant by the 'JMR-611', but now I can tell you exactly what this river radar can do,” explains Colin. “I think the best thing about this internship at JRC | Alphatron Marine is the enthusiasm of the employees. You notice that they are proud of their work and products; they were happy to explain to me. For example, I have been on board several ships, even on a new construction project, to see how equipment is installed or repaired. It gave me a good idea of what JRC | Alphatron Marine can do, but also what I can do with my training later on.”
